Twice Shy: Masterpost
Title: Twice Shy
Fandom: Star Trek XI
Genre: Mixed bag. Some romance, some angst, some plot, some smut. And AU, obviously.
Pairing: Kirk/McCoy
Rating: NC-17 on the whole.
Spoilers: Assumes knowledge of the new movie.
Word count: ~ 20.000
Content notice: (Skip) Violence. | Detailed warnings for those who need them. | Warning policy.

Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction set in the world of Star Trek. Neither the world nor the characters belong to me in any way, and I make no money from this.

Summary: Written for the following prompt, over at part eight of the StarTrek XI Kinkmeme:

Bones is a werewolf.

The moment he meant James Kirk, got a good whiff of his scent, he knew he was fucked.

He had thought those stories about werewolves scenting their mate were all bullshit.

But the stories about mating for life have got to be fake, right? Right?

Author's notes: Finally, finally managed to post this properly, in an easily readable format. Betaed by the fantabulous [info]salixbabylon, who told me that my comma usage in this one was uncommonly atrocious.

This behemoth happened totally on accident, and I'm still not rightly sure how I managed to write it in the space of time that I did. But I do know that if it wasn't for everybody reading it, cheering me on and commenting and being all around incredible, I would have burned out somewhere in the middle. So thanks, guys, you are all awesome :D

Special thanks again to [info]salixbabylon, who cheers me on and holds my hand over the internet when I write myself into a corner, to [info]doctoraicha who is indirectly responsible for this thing because I was happily sticking to the RPF before she came along, and The Boyfriend, who can choreograph fight scenes for me despite being on the other side of the Atlantic, and who knows enough about Trek Canon to continually remind me if I run into obstacles that "when in doubt, kill a redshirt."

Hi!
Oh god, I remember reading this in the comments of the kink_meme; and I loved it sooo much. I updated five times a day and ALWAYS did a little happy dance when there was more.

thank you so much for writing this, I will read it again in good formatting ;) and also, I think I will put it on my mp3player. (which: thanks for formatting it into txt! <3)

I will probably review it part by part again, but just cause this popped up right now on my f-list: THIS IS AWESOME! I LOVE IT! :D

(also, I totally dig werewolves. yay! If I ever have time again (school >_>), would you be okay with art for this? like, Bones as wolf and such?)

Hehehe, thanks for the compliments, I'm so glad people enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it :D

(Formatting into txt was more or less a foregone conclusion for me, I read fic mostly on my Mp3 player, so it was an obvious choice! And I love it when author's make my life easier, so it was obvious what sort of author I wanted to be, lol.)

If I ever have time again (school >_>), would you be okay with art for this? like, Bones as wolf and such?

Would I be okay? I would be THRILLED. Interesting things would happen to bats, dogs and dolphins anywhere near my location because of the squeeing noises I would make. Srsly. Just drop me a link if you make anything, it'd make my DAY.

I downloaded the file, went off and read this and have returned to tell you how much I enjoyed the story!

I was worried at first since you had Jim sleeping with extremely junior crew members which is high on my list of no captain ever would or should do it, including Jim. Almost stopped reading it there, but kept going and am glad I did (although I still really hate that part, sorry.)

I loved Bones sad resignation to his fate of having a tomcat for a mate. Adored his relationship with Uhura (I'm always a sucker for, and write it that way myself, stories where they become best friends). Also the pack as a whole. Super dynamics.

Jim's feelings of hurt and betrayal were wonderful as was his initial melt at puppy eyes coming from a real "puppy."

And oh, the understated beauty of Jim's devastation over Bones' "death!" Just lovely!

And I loved, loved, LOVED how it turned out Jim had been wanting all along! Two gorgeous idiots! Wonderful! Then things got sizzling hot followed by more of my favorite thing in the universe -- insecure-beneath-it-all Jim.

Wonderful!

I'm glad you enjoyed it despite some misgivings! And thanks for the long and detailed comment :D

since you had Jim sleeping with extremely junior crew members which is high on my list of no captain ever would or should do it

In hindsight, that's one of these things where my characterization of Jim is shaky. I feel like I have Bones down, but I'm a little bit more wobbly on Kirk. I'm kind of working on a fic at the moment with the express purpose of figuring him out as a character. I'm flattered you read the rest of the story even if you hate that part.

I love Uhura. She sneaks into a lot of my stories and steals the scene. I don't really mind ;)

And... just, thank you for the rest of the comment. It's always reassuring as a writer to see that you managed to get across to the readers, and I love hearing about which bits people loved. *grins*

Thank you!

Dunno about a sequel - I have an outtake or two knocking about in my head, and possibly a timestamp. Hopefully I'll find the time to write those.

Heh, I do hope you enjoy the fic :)

The thing is, I've been in fandom for seven years, so when it came to starting up a fic journal, I had pretty definite ideas about how it should be set up. I always felt I wasn't prolific enough for one, but then I started noticing how chaotic my tags were, over at my personal journal, and I realized that it was either organize the Personal Journal (nonononono, there are still areas of that journal I don't touch, because they'll catapult me into depression right quick) or try to archive my fic differently - and that option won out.

And then, of course, it's been seven years of me on the move, reading from every kind of remote device in the book, listening to other people complain about this or that thing an author did... yeah, I covered all my bases ;) I'm wondering if I shouldn't offer the coding bits for other authors, actually ;)

i downloaded the .txt file so i could read it on my pda. thank you! i really appreciate it. and your story? it is truly awesome, although i'm not sure if anyone my age should actually use that word without a shred of irony. seriously, i really enjoyed "twice shy". i read a lot of fanfic (and kirk/mccoy has been like crack to me lately) and this is one of my favorite stories. it is an original and believable story (even with the werewolves!) with well-drawn characters and emotional heft. i've read it a few times now and i always find something new to appreciate and ponder. (in my last reading, there was mention of bones giving a crew member his weekly portion of o-neg and i immediately thought of vampires. because if there are werewolves in this universe, then why not vampires, eh?)

anyway, i'll stop gushing now. =) i can't wait to read your next story.

This is epic, both in length and plot and sheer awesomeness. You win entirely for writing it, and coming up with the concept in the first instance.

I'm also nabbing the html file for future bad days where an injection (hypospray?) of Werewolf!Bones/Jim will be just what I'll need.

Thank you!

DLd in txt (transferred it to Word), but having available as either html or txt is wonderful. Personally I have vision problems and need to expand fic up to a 22 font and this availability in one place makes my life much easier. Thank you!

And back now that I've read it, OMG, that was awesome. I couldn't stop reading. That was angsty and perfect.
